While visiting the exhibit rooms at the Hokkaido University Museum in Sapporo, I saw one man with a camcorder cabled to a laptop which another man carried atop a wooden board. It turns out that this was a transmission trial to allow children at the university hospital to make virtual field trips to area facilities (zoo, museums) and events. Since it is a live connection, the kids are able to ask questions or request more time/closer views from the two-man team who are on-site.
A similar system could benefit people in other institutions than hospitals: schools to far to make an on-site visit could send a team or request the local team, old-people's homes and other long-term care facilities might work this way, too.
Then, of course, for individual users with an Internet connection, an interactive (but not live, 2-way experience) alternative way to "visit" a museum is with a set of (audio) slideshows or short movie clips that users can view according to their interests and convenience.
